Digitization

In many cases, existing (analogue) documents need to be converted for use in a digital environment (e.g. GIS).

For this purpose they are scanned, georeferenced and then digitized. This is a manual operation in which information can also be added to the digitized lines and points (attribution).

A classic example is cadastral maps: the plots are digitized and the plot numbers added. Aquaterra did such digitizing for the cadastral maps of Flanders (AGIV). More than 4 million lots were created digitally.

Another example is the soundings of the Scheldt. These historical maps were digitized to create a numerical model of the Scheldt over time.
